A new separation technique has been created as an alternative to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Sequential injection chromatography (SIC) has several known advantages over HPLC regarding simplicity, inexpensiveness, portability, ease of use, maintenance requirement and operation time, however, a team of scientists have worked to overcome a number of its failings in order to make it a viable alternative.

In a study published by the Chemistry Central Journal, Abubakr Idris and Rafea Elgorashe created a high pressure resistant selection value to overcome solution leakage and added a new miniaturised multi-channel fiber optic detector to their revamped SIC system to detect PRP and HTZ at 270 and 290 nm, respectively.

They then conducted a comparative analysis of the new SIC method with traditional HPLC systems and found that the former is more rapid and reagent-saving.

Other points of contrast such as resolution, peak symmetry accuracy, precision and limits of detection and quantification revealed comparable results.
