Olympic gold medallist tests positive for banned substance

US Olympic gold medallist LaShawn Merritt has agreed to a provisional suspension from the track following a positive drug detection test.

The ban will be in place until the country's anti-doping agency resolves the case, although Merritt admitted use of a male enhancement product.

Traces of dehydroepiandrosterone, a steroids precursor, were found in his system, although the Associated Press reports it is due to ExtenZe.

According to the news provider, the merchandise promises increased sexual potency, with Merritt saying in a statement that it was a "foolish, immature and egotistical mistake".

Doug Logan, chief executive officer of US Track & Field, said: "[The athlete] has now put his entire career under a cloud and in the process made himself the object of jokes."

Almost half of India's national Kabaddi wrestling team recently tested positive for steroids when attempting to qualify for the Asian Games, with 13 of the 29 squad members found guilty.
