Smart bubble detection for HPLC protection
Jun 11 2025
Testa Analytical has introduced the Solvent Line Monitor, a compact and intelligent solution designed to enhance the reliability of HPLC systems by detecting undissolved gas microbubbles and preventing operational disruptions.
Microbubbles in solvent lines are a common but often overlooked issue in HPLC workflows. Their presence can lead to a range of problems, including retention time shifts, pulsating baselines, erratic peak areas, distorted peak shapes, pump malfunctions, and abnormally high back pressure. Left unchecked, these issues can significantly compromise data accuracy and precision - making it difficult to distinguish low-level analytes from baseline noise.
The Solvent Line Monitor addresses this challenge by continuously and non-invasively monitoring up to two HPLC pump feed lines for the presence of gas bubbles. Upon detection, the system triggers an alarm and can automatically shut down the HPLC operation to prevent damage or invalid results - offering a vital safeguard for laboratories demanding high analytical performance.
Highly configurable and user-friendly, the Solvent Line Monitor allows users to set sensitivity levels, operating modes, and alarm thresholds via a PC-based control application supplied with the device. Detection parameters - including minimum bubble size, frequency, and count - can be tailored to specific workflows. Alarm responses can also be customised, ranging from simple audible alerts to automatic stop signals, ensuring flexible integration into existing setups.
Engineered for reliability and ease of use, the Solvent Line Monitor is a valuable tool for any laboratory looking to maintain consistent HPLC performance and data integrity.
