Anatune to Run Twister Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction Workshops for Food, Beverages are Water

Jun 29 2011

The GERSTEL Twister is a magnetic stir bar that has been coated with a partitioning phase of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). While it is stirring the sample solution, the Twister efficiently extracts organic components from aqueous or other liquid samples or from the sample’s headspace. After extracting analytes from the sample solution on to the Twister, compounds can be determined in two ways:

Volatile and semi-volatile compounds may be thermally desorbed for analysis by GC-MS using the GERSTEL Thermal Desorption Unit. For less volatile (or thermally labile) compounds Twister stir bars can be back-extracted with solvent and injected into an LC-MS.

This simple, solvent-free extraction technique provides quantitative analysis with extremely low detection limits (sub parts per billion), has excellent bar-to-bar reproducibility and is inexpensive, since every bar can be re-used many times.

Stir bar sorptive extraction with Twister is becoming increasingly important to analysts working in the food, flavour, fragrance, beverage and water sectors. The technology now offers stir bars with a range of polarities and novel ways of applying this uniquely useful technique are emerging.

Twister stir bar sorptive extraction offers the following benefits:

• Simple, one stage extraction, with multiple samples extracted in parallel

• Low consumable cost – stir bars are re-useable

• Ultra-low detection limits – the whole of the extracted sample is injected into the GC-MS split-less

• Predictable recoveries of analytes

Twister workshops

In March this year, Anatune (GERSTEL’s distributor in the UK and Ireland), ran a successful series of workshops on Twister at their facility in Cambridge. Demand was such that these events were fully booked.

In response to customer requests for more of the same, Anatune is offering another series of one-day Twister workshops , with separately themed days for water analysis and for analysts working in the food, flavour, fragrance and beverage industries.

The Twister workshops will include both classroom sessions and practical work in the laboratory, allowing attendees to gain a clear understanding of the attributes, applicability, scope and limitations of stir bar sorptive extraction as they see what this technology has to offer.

The number of places available on each workshop are limited to ensure that attendees have a good opportunity to discuss their individual interests with the expert trainers.

Workshops will be held throughout 2011. Anatune has committed to provide sufficient places, so no one should be disappointed.

To register your interest in attending a Twister workshop, please call Anatune on: 01954 212909 or email: enquiries@anatune.co.uk
