MonoTrap™ is a state-of-the-art tool for the extraction and analysis of volatile and semi-volatile components by MMSE (Monolithic Material Sorption Extraction), which will be of interest to many industries including the perfume and cosmetic, food and beverage, forensic, toxicology, environmental, chemical and biochemical.

MMSE using MonoTrap™ demonstrates a number of key advantages when compared to alternative methods for adsorption and extraction of volatile and semi-volatile components (eg SBSE, SPME). Conventional media for sampling generally exhibit low surface area and thin polymer coatings, which may lead to poor recovery and the need for prolonged extraction times. MonoTrap™ is based on state-of-the-art silica monolith technology. It has a large surface area due to the pores within the silica skeleton, whilst the through-pores reduce the resistance to flow. The result is a medium that requires no pre-conditioning, exhibits fast adsorption and extraction and offers complete desorption with ease.

These advantages have demonstrated excellent benefits in many areas and a range of industry applications have been identified including analysis of cherry blossom, red wine, body odours, soap, lavender, fatty acids in the atmosphere, organic solvents in the atmosphere, coffee, tea, gasoline residues, mango juice, curry powder, bread and non-polar metabolites from human plasma. Further application areas are continually being identified. Copies of all application notes are available on request from Hichrom Limited at [email protected] along with sample packs, demonstration video CDs and technical brochures.

Sample adsorption with MonoTrap™ has been demonstrated to work using headspace sampling, direct contact sampling and passive sampling techniques. Sample extraction can be achieved using either solvent extraction or the latest thermal desorption products. Two chemistries are available: one has the same characteristics as silica gel, whereas the silica frame of the other contains activated/graphite carbon as an adsorption surface to aid retention of more polar components. Both types are bonded with C18 groups. Disc and rod formats are available. Contact Hichrom Limited for further information on all MonoTrap products. Tel: +44 (0) 118 930 3660 www.hichrom.co.uk
