Overcome Challenging TOC Determinations in Effluent

Oct 17 2018

Total organic carbon (TOC) is often used as a non-specific indicator of water quality. In the natural process of our environment and the man-made processes of industry the ubiquitous nature of carbon provides a screening tool to determine the status of water quality. Faced with an increasing number of strict demands required by National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits for the discharge of treated wastewater into the water cycle, industrial and municipal wastewater treatment operators need a reliable TOC system that can determine contamination from natural occurring compounds, man-made compounds, viruses, bacteria and biological growth. At the same time, they are being challenged to cut costs. OI Analytical’s new 1080 Combustion Total Organic Carbon Analyser allows the user to tackle the toughest aqueous samples with confidence. Even traditionally difficult samples with high salt concentrations can be measured accurately and easily without the need for expensive kits, modules or options.

The 1080 employs high-temperature (680°C) catalytic combustion to oxidize and convert organic compounds present in aqueous samples to CO2, which is then measured by a solid-state non-dispersive infrared detector (SS-NDIR). The SS-NDIR provides selective CO2 determination and reduces interferences from other compounds. Engineered with the operator in mind, the 1080 features novel patent-pending technologies that make the system the most flexible, robust combustion TOC analyser with the lowest total cost of ownership available. A new combustion reactor design protects the platinum catalyst from non-combustible salts, ensuring consistent oxidation conditions and extending the life of the catalyst. Improvements have also been made to the injector design and operation, providing more flexibility over a large sample range and significantly reducing injector maintenance and downtime, extending the life of the injector. Critical components, such as the combustion tube and furnace, are easily and quickly accessed through a side panel simplifying servicing the instrument.

With a focus on a lower cost of ownership and laboratory workflow, the 1080 TOC Analyser was designed to provide simple operation and maintenance without compromising performance. The 1080 TOC Analyser is able to process up to 88 samples per run with the optional 1088 autosampler, which fits directly beneath the TOC, saving valuable bench space.

The innovative, patented technology of the 1080 allows this analyser to exceed compliance and regulatory standards, making it ideal for monitoring rivers, lakes, streams, sea water, and wastewater.
