The Chromatography Society Hosts Four Day Event for Students

Jul 26 2016

Later this year, the Lake District will play host to an educational event hosted by The Chromatography Society. Aimed post graduate students and chromatographers at the beginning of their careers — the event will provide delegates with information about the basics of the science behind chromatography, deeper aspects behind key chromatographic areas and the technique’s application in everyday industry, commerce and practice.

The four-day affair will take place in the Wordsworth Hotel in Grasmere from the 14th-17th October 2016 and will feature lectures supplemented by group activities and evening entertainment — including speed dating for chromatographers.

What’s the event about?

The course is aimed at those finishing studies in chromatography or those just breaking into the industry, and will cover the fundamentals of liquid chromatography (LC). Topics including method development, calculations and optimisation are all included. LC is one of the main chromatographic techniques employed in academia and industry, some of the recent developments are discussed in the article, Recent Developments in Support Materials for use in High Performance Liquid Chromatography.

Moreover, the event will also detail how the procedure is being used in academia and industry. There will also be session with advice on interview techniques and presentation skills to help chromatographers progress along the career ladder.

What’s on at the event?

According to the President of The Chromatography Society, Dr Paul Ferguson, the four-day event will be jam-packed with talks, walks and much more.

“We are very much looking forward to welcoming delegates to the Lake District for this event, which will comprise approximately 20 hours of lectures, together with walking activities and a number of evening events,” he explained. “The lecture programme itself will be ‘fixed’ content, but there is considerable scope to include additional topics as requested by attendees in the initial session and informal discussion during walks. We look forward to a successful and productive weekend.”

There is a full list of exciting speakers already confirmed, including the following prominent names in the field of LC:

  • Professor Tony Edge from Agilent
  • Professor Mel Euerby from Shimadzu
  • Dr John Lough from the University of Sunderland
  • Tony Taylor from Crawford Scientific
  • Dr Paul Ferguson from AstraZeneca and chair of The Chromatography Society itself

Who’s behind the event?

While The Chromatography Society are the main body behind the event, they have secured sponsors to cover the costs of the occasion itself, as well as providing bursaries and funding for chromatographers studying and working in the field.

“We welcome further interest from companies wishing to sponsor post-graduate students to attend this event,” Ferguson continued. “This is an excellent opportunity to help develop the chromatographers of the future.”

As such, the event represents a unique opportunity for those interested in the practice of LC to learn more about it, make some vital networking contacts and learn techniques to help you along the career path.
