Brazil will become a 'mass spectrometry' innovator

Marcos Eberlin has been recognised by Waters Corporation for his pioneering work in mass spectrometry, lauding the Thompson Laboratory in Brazil as the 'most prestigious' mass spectrometry laboratory in all of Latin America.

Dr Eberlin believes the pioneering professors and students of the Institute of Chemistry are no longer playing catch-up, and have become innovators in mass spectrometry.

He has supervised a new generation of Brazilian mass spectrometrists as an educator, with over 100 researchers and professionals employed at institutions and companies in Brazil and throughout South America, the United States, Canada, and Europe.

He also directs one of the world's largest mass spectrometry research teams, involving 45 students and employees who can churn out almost 60 manuscripts a year.

This pioneering laboratory work is primarily focussed around ambient mass spectrometry, proteomics and peptidomics, lipidomics, MS imaging, bacteria and microorganism fingerprinting, petroleomics, MS of ionic liquids and MS fingerprinting for forensic investigations.

Tim Riley, Waters Centers of Innovation Program Director, commended Professor Eberlin, saying: "The Thomson Laboratory is the most prestigious mass spectrometry laboratory in all of Latin America"
